Half Term Activities in Colchester: Family Pickleball at the Pickleball Barn

October half term runs from Monday 26 to Friday 30 October for most Essex schools, and the clocks go back the weekend before. That means a week of shorter days, changeable weather and children who need something to do. If you want a half term activity the whole family can play together, indoors and away from the rain, pickleball is well worth a try.

Why pickleball works for the whole family

Pickleball takes about 10 minutes to learn. The court is small, the paddles are light and the ball is slow enough that everyone gets plenty of shots. Serves are underarm, so nobody gets blasted off court, and rallies start almost straight away.

That puts children and adults on a level footing. Grandparents can play alongside teenagers, and plenty of parents discover their children are already better than them. You do not need to be sporty. You just need to show up.

Half term without the weather worries

The Pickleball Barn is a private, indoor, carpeted court in a converted barn at Foxes Farm, Eight Ash Green, just outside Colchester. When you book, the court is yours for the hour, so there are no strangers waiting to get on and no queue for a turn.

Paddles and balls are set up and ready when you arrive, so there is nothing to buy before you try it. It is open 7 days a week, which means you can fit a session in on a weekday morning, after lunch or at the weekend, whatever the forecast says.
