Indoor Pickleball in Essex: Play All Winter, Whatever the Weather

The clocks go back on 25 October, and for most pickleball players that is when the season gets awkward. Outdoor courts turn wet and slippery, the wind takes the ball wherever it likes, and by 5 o'clock it is too dark to see the line. You do not have to stop playing. Foxes Pickleball at Foxes Farm, just outside Colchester, is a private indoor court inside a converted barn on our working farm. Book it, turn up, and for the hour it is yours, whatever the weather is doing outside.

Why Indoor Pickleball Makes Sense This Winter

Pickleball is played with a light plastic ball full of holes. That is what makes it so easy to learn, and it is also why the outdoor game struggles in a British winter. A breeze is enough to push the ball off course, a damp court makes every quick step a risk, and rain stops play altogether.

Indoors, none of that matters. The barn is dry, lit and sheltered, so the ball bounces the same way on a wet Tuesday in January as it does on a bright Saturday in June. You are not checking the forecast before you leave the house, and you are not cancelling at the last minute. If you have booked, you are playing.

What Makes Foxes Pickleball Different

Most courts mean sharing the space, waiting your turn or playing with strangers. Foxes Pickleball works the other way round. When you book, the whole court is yours for the session, with nobody else in the barn.

Each booking covers up to 4 players for 60 minutes at a flat £20 an hour. There are no peak rates, no membership and no joining fee. We are open 7 days a week, and you can book online in about 2 minutes.

The court has a carpeted playing surface that is kind on knees and ankles. Paddles and balls are ready when you arrive, there are Bluetooth speakers for your own music, free wifi, and parking right outside the barn.

Pickleball already has a strong following around Colchester. South Suffolk Pickleball Club, based at Capel St Mary near Ipswich, runs regular indoor and outdoor club sessions, and in June 2026 its Constable Cup tournament was held at the Essex Indoor Sports Arena at the University of Essex. Closer to home, Stanway in Colchester u3a runs weekly pickleball groups on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and at the time of writing all 3 were showing waiting lists.

Clubs are a great way to meet other players and play competitively. Foxes Pickleball offers something different: a private court for your own group, booked at a time that suits you. It sits well alongside club play, whether you want extra practice with friends between sessions or an easy way to introduce family and colleagues to the game.

What to Expect on Your First Session

If you have never played before, that is completely fine. Most of our players turn up as beginners. The rules are short enough to learn in a few minutes, and most groups are having proper rallies well before the hour is up.

Wear comfortable clothes and trainers, and bring a drink. Find us at Foxes Farm, Halstead Road, Eight Ash Green, Colchester CO6 3PT. Once you are parked, the court is set up and ready to go.

If your group would rather be shown the ropes, add Jason's Hour to your booking. Jason is a qualified Level 1 pickleball coach. He explains the rules in plain English, runs a few quick warm up drills, then gets everyone into real games. The coached hour costs £45 on top of your court booking.

The barn also works well for groups looking for something different this winter. Jason runs coached birthday and family hours, and corporate afternoons with a proper tournament bracket, which makes a good alternative to another Christmas meal out.
